Preperation
- Never “Wing It”. Be sure
to map out your destination the night before the interview. Helpful
websites: Mapquest.com
and Yahoo
Maps.
- Check public transportation schedules
and be aware of any traffic conditions that can cause delays in
route to your interview.
- Know your interviewer. Research your
potential employer on the web or industry related periodicals.
Have questions prepared to ask employer. Don’t rely
on written questions, have several ideas in mind that you can
work into your conversation.
- Have several hard copies of your resume available to bring
with you to the interview.
- Be sure to double-check salary and dates of employment. When
filling out job applications it’s important to be accurate
with both your salary and employment dates. Any inconsistencies
will come up during a routine background check and result in a
company passing on your candidacy.
Presentation
- First impressions count. Always wear a dark conservative suite,
polished professional shoes, etc.
- Be sure to be well groomed. A nice haircut and a clean shave
go a long way.
- Imagine yourself as the interviewer. Does your image convey
one of professionalism and success?
Punctuality
- Arrive at the client site 10-15 minutes early. This will give
you enough time to fill out an application if necessary and start
the interview in a timely manner.
Interview
- This is your time to shine. Always introduce yourself with a
firm handshake and good eye contact. Good eye contact throughout
the interview exudes confidence.
- Show enthusiasm and interest throughout the interview.
- Be prepared to answer as well as ask questions with the utmost
confidence. Think “confidence without cockiness”.
- Honesty is the best policy. Don’t get discouraged with
questions you can’t answer. Instead focus on your willingness
and ability to learn.
- Refrain from simply answering questions with a yes/no answer.
Expand upon your answers with examples from your personal experience.
- Speak clearly and concisely. Know your audience. Adapt your
interview style to that of the interviewer.
- Thank interviewer for his/her time. Again give a firm handshake
with good eye contact. This may be your last impression so express
interest in the position without desperation.
- If you are working with a recruiter, talk with him or her about
sending a follow up thank you letter. Getting someone to proof
read your work is always helpful.
