You have an open position and after an extensive search, you finally find the dream candidate. This applicant has a proven track record of success, stellar recommendations and fits in perfectly with your company’s culture. You excitedly offer the candidate the job… and then he or she declines. What went wrong?

This situation happens as a result of a bad experience Warningfor the candidate during the hiring process. Although the interviewer holds the control, judgments are being made on both sides of the table. This is the candidate’s first opportunity to look at the company’s culture and values.

Next time you’re hiring, consider the following four points to avoid pushing your top pick away:

Interview Time – Too many days of seemingly endless interviews may turn a candidate off from your company, however it’s important to have a thorough interview to make sure he or she is the right choice. Be mindful of the candidate’s time and keep your interviews down to one or two days.

Incentives – When working the numbers, know what the demand is for professionals in this type of position and make sure that you’ve designed a competitive compensation package. Also, emphasize the additional perks of the position to your candidate. Benefits, growth opportunity, convenient working location and a pleasant working environment are all great reasons to accept an offer. There are many motivations aside from salary that can attract great talent to your company.

Interview To Offer Window – If you really like a candidate, offer him or her the position quickly. If you wait too long, the candidate might think you’re uninterested and move on.

Response Period – While you want to give your candidate some time to consider your offer, politely request a response within 48 hours. This will demonstrate that the open position is too valued to be left open while also protecting you from being strung-along.

Between a growing job market and the available tools for applicants to find positions such as job boards, referrals and social media sites, there’s a good chance your candidates will have multiple offers. By implementing an effective hiring process that makes your candidate feel that you’re mindful of their goals and respectful of their time and talent, your company will stand out as a clear choice for the candidate’s next career move.
